History of the Defoor Centre
Neighborhood legend is that the original building, a farm house built in the 1800's and labeled "The Old Stone House", served as a Civil War hospital. Parts of the early structure are still visible inside our lobby today. The Crooked Road is the nickname the soldiers called the street that is now known as Defoor Avenue. After extended research at The Atlanta History Center, we have located the "Old Stone House" on a map dated 1841
Some of the neighbors were the Howell's who operated Howell's Mill and the Defoor's who developed Defoor's Ferry and later lived on Chattahoochee Avenue.
In the 1970's The Gospel Harvester Church owned the property and they added on the hexagonal-shaped gallery now called "The Forum at Defoor."
Deljou Art Group bought the building in 1994 along with an adjacent lot and added on the 12,000 square-foot warehouse, which they utilized as their artist's lofts. The skylights they added in order to capture natural light remain today.
The facility is now converted into several galleries which accommodate meetings and events and the Defoor Cafe and Bar.
We host a variety of events in the ever-changing galleries; from weddings and receptions, Mitzvah celebrations, business meetings and baby showers.
Please check back with us often for upcoming events, daily specials and art openings. At the Defoor Centre, Every room is an adventure and Every event is special.
